The Fascinasia Table was a collaborative work with Canadian artist Daniel Stanford. The artwork incorporated within the table is a unique blend of photography with collage elements and precise application of gold leaf, watercolor, Chinese ink, acrylic paint, raw pigments, and resin. It is based on a 2016 photograph, shot by Daniel, of an award-winning Oldenburg Breed Stallion Jumping Horse named  Starmont. Embedded in the painting is a segment of the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Singapore. Stanford's use of archival materials reflects the sequence of the five elements - wood, fire, and earth; earth gives birth to gold, gold creates water, and water makes wood. Rafael Calvo designed and handcrafted the tabletop and base out of 150-year-old Douglas fir beams salvaged from New York City townhomes. When Daniel and Rafael met, they recognized the unique opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece that would blur the line between artwork and furniture. Meeting Daniel and working collaboratively on this piece has been an inspiring opportunity for Rafael; it allowed him to expand to a new type of design and cross that final line into the art world. The finished piece was displayed and sold at Macaya Gallery in Wynwood during the Miami Art Basel 2016. As with all of Rafael’s works, this is a one-of-a-kind handcrafted piece; no two pieces of furniture are the same.
